Anthocyanin in the Buds, Why your Weed is Purple?

Purple color of weed come from Anthocyanin pigment, a universal plant colorant responsible for the red, purple, and blue; evident in many fruits, vegetable, grains, flowers. Anthocyanin suggests the vast list of health benefits; and many medicine theories (traditional ones from all around the world and the official science too) use Anthocyanin historically to treat conditions such as liver disorders, diarrhoea, kidney problems, infections, it provides the reduction of blood pressure, it improves the eyesight, suppresses the development of cancer cells; and it even cures the common cold. Many shall agree it’s extremely easy to imagine raspberry (which contains the hell amount of anthocyanin) as a medicine, in a form of some grandma’s anti-cold raspberry recipe. And besides the healing it is used as a natural colour in food/health/cosmetic industries.

This is Weed with Purple / Purplish Marijuana Buds - See?

And right here below there’s the very nice close-up from @chewberto420, you can see that all the purple (or red) colour is Anthocyanin, it approaches into cannabis trichomes:

Being a phenolic compound, Anthocyanin may also behave as the pro-oxidant, means: it plays against cancer, diabetes, urinal and cardio issues. Yet it is not well known by now about how exactly it works, whether by itself alone or being a component of a more complicated sequence, but it however works as it’s said and it makes your body stronger for sure. So! Eat berries! They are yummies, and you can cook them along with cannabis into delicious cannabis desserts, find the hot edible recipes here by this link: The Cookbook App by Chef420

How To Make The Weed Purple

Exposure to cold

Exactly the thing happening when summer turns into fall when all plants change leaves to yellow and red: all plants produce Anthocyanin when the temperatures drop.

Basically from any stress plants produce Anthocyanin, and the cold is one of such stresses. The science does not know for sure by far, but this may serve as some sort of explanation why it helps against health issues, right because plant just do the same when synthesize the anthocyanin in itself, and it works to suppress a stress, illness or cold or a wrong nutrition. Exposure of the cannabis plant to colder temperatures shall make buds more purple, the “how long” and “how cold” can be a more tricky technology, but the basic idea is to expose the plant to the cold.

Genetics

Genetic food engineering uses anthocyanin as a visual marker, as soon as this is a quite forgiving genetic material easy to deal with (sources say so, I don’t know))). And then it may be yet another reason for purple buds – the genetically determined amount of anthocyanin in a certain strain.

Anthocyanin Color from PH

Anthocyanin is very sensible to the PH level (and this is another stress for the plant too), and the colourful compound is degraded to none in an environment with a higher PH. It changes it colour as soon as PH level changes, it can be red in acidic (pH < 7), purple in neutral (pH = 7), yellow with greenish in alkaline (pH > 7). Can serve as the natural PH indicator either.

Do experiments! Keep notes of what you’re doing!

This is how you get the amount of Purple into the trichomes of your weed. And here the following is about what else to do with it:

Where Else?

Except of in the Cannabis flowers, especially those showing a lot of the purple colour, a whole lot of Anthocyanin can be also found in these:

Anthocyanin except of cannabis flowers can be discovered in Red Cabbage (Cyan Cabbage)

Anthocyanin except of cannabis flowers can be discovered in Raspberry and Blackberry

Anthocyanin except of cannabis flowers can be discovered in Grapes

Except the cannabis plant buds, anthocyanin can be found in the red oranges

Pretty everything as long as it is a fruit, or a vegetable or a flower and have the vast and the obvious cyan / purple component in the color (in terms of CMYK or RGB idea of describing the colour), alike to all the images above. Anthocyanin carriers can be Red Cabbage, Cauliflower, Raspberries, Blueberries, Grapes (especial like those on the pictures with a lot of cyan component of the overall color dominating), red oranges also called blood oranges, cherry, eggplant, black peas, blackcurrant, etc, etc.

More of a totally crazy Scientific stuff about anthocyanin can be found here, in the US National Library of Medicine, for example: Anthocyanin and Human Health, An In Vitro Investigative Approach

And this one we’d recommend for further reading, little bit easier and smaller in size: Anthocyanins, More Than Nature’s Colours – and we used it as a source of knowledge too, it is curious having a number of interesting facts. Hope you’ll enjoy the reading of the whole thing, yet for me personally it happened to be too far scientific.

Cooking Weed and Berries together?

Why not! Having the said you only imagine that a cheesecake which is hardly infused with both – blueberry and marijuana must be an ultimate weapon, a BFG perfect weapon against many health issues, I can see that now (ha!ha!ha!)

A Tall Ship Loaded with Weed? Hah! This is the THC-Infused Cheesecake runs high over the waves, hehehehe

Sativa vs Indica — Making The Right Choice (CBD Matters!)

Whenever you decide getting closer wether to a Marijuana recreational culture or a Cannabis way of medicine or meditation, this is the next question you ask:

Why is Sativa, and What is Indica for?

Pretty everywhere where marijuana is respected and is allowed by law, in every single seeds’ description, every grow-shop, every dispensary, every coffee-shop (whatever the legal weed delivery is called in your country). Everywhere the weed, except its exact speccy name, is labeled also: “Sativa”, “Indica”, “Skunk”

Sometimes with percentages like this:

This is one of the most popular specie in the world, and it’s only 75% of indica, and it’s said in the description: Blueberry is a famously enjoyable and classy cannabis that has a tasty flavor and vibrant colours. This indica is known for its colourful fan leaves and purplish bud that produce a fruity flavor and taste. This is an excellent strain for pain relief and relaxation.

How To Distinguish Sativa or Indica, and — Why?

This is the easy question, don’t be afraid of it too much. One my friend once told me a simple formula to catch the basic idea: Sativa is to laugh, and Indica is to sleep. Not only this, but it shows the idea pretty well, and easy to remember. ‘Skunk’ however is the indoor-breeders’ MIX of Indica and Sativa (wiki) taking its name from the animal due to a strong smell which these species provide. Just to note that there are only two main families: Indica and Sativa, and skunk is not a number three, but just used widely in the coffee-shops of Amsterdam.

Sativa gives a taller plant comparing to Indica which is more bushy. That is why breeders often add indica into mixture to get the ‘highness’ of sativa but the size of indica.

Many sources however point to the shape of a plant and teach us how to distinguish between Indica and Sativa when they are in a form of a plant… as if we meet plants daily on the streets or trotting around a jungle, as if there is much difference when a friend offers a puff and you refuse because of a wrong plant-family.

Here we go the cannabis leaves of Sativa (on the left) and Indica (on the right):

Indica vs Sativa - leaf shapes
Sativa leaf (on the left) and Indica leaf (on the right)

Sativa

The main difference however is that SATIVA contains more of THC, not always but in general. This is why it is “for laughing”. Being the main psychoactive component of marijuana THC affects the brain, therefore you feel “higher” due to more amount of THC consumed. Even a little bit hallucinogenic it may be with strong strains, sources se-so, but to get that high from a regular marijuana is not easy, you’ll need to train yourself to feel your body well-enough and play with your brain and feelings (some people spend years in temples in India smoking religiously all the time… “hallucinogenic” is not that you see monsters all around right after one puff, don’t worry).

Indica

As for INDICA… It does not mean at all that you’re not high with Indica, it’s very fine too, but just contains (in general) more of CBD which gives you relaxation and pain relief (if any) and this is the reason why it is referred as “for sleep” and this is the reason why Indica is in fact more close to the definition of MEDICAL marijuana.

Summary – Indica and Sativa

PLANTSSATIVA is more straight and tall cannabis plant, loosely branched with long and narrow leaves, basically much more taller than a Cannabis Indica plant. While INDICA is more like a bush, densely branched and wider leaves (see the image to compare), and significantly lower in height. It’s said that Sativa can reach up to 10-20 feet height in the wild, and this is another reason why breeders mix both Indica and Sativa into the INDOOR strains to inherit the smaller height of Indica to keep the plants still lower than your growing space is.

THC / CBDINDICA contains in general more of CBD and less of THC. Therefore it is considered more for the medical use, relaxing, calm and pain-releasing. While SATIVA is highly energetic, stimulating and adds some extra activity to the brain too, more “trippy” so to say. It’s not that Indica does not provide a trip, yet it contains less of THC. You can read the related article about THC tripping: THC: Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol

Growing INDICA is more often considered as an AMATEUR strain to grow your own Marijuana supply in a household. Don’t worry, you’ll be high enough, and you’ll get all medical effects too, Indica is not ‘bad’, but just EASIER, and it stands better against pests and climate conditions.

More of History

The terms of “Indica” and “Sativa” were suggested for the first time by French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1785. While his comparing the Cannabis plants grown in India which were used to produce highly psychoactive hashish for religious purpose, to those from Europe mainly used for ropes and cloth. Eventually he discovered that the latter was less psychoactive. And this is the very idea to differentiate “herb” and “marijuana” in legal terminology nowadays.

However, the modern breeders are already far from these initial classification. Most of strains are a mixture of two, and Indica may already contain good amount of brain-altering compounds, making scientists to debate to change the terminology. But for the everyday use, for the cannabis marketing and for the home-growing referring to cannabis plants as Indica or Sativa still works good.
